Artist's Table w/ Itzhak Perlman and Jacques Pépin

Just caught this program on PBS this evening. It's a special hour-long conversation and collaboration between the violinist Itzhak Perlman and master chef Jacques Pépin.

You can hear the conversation of the entire program on the website (Be warned that a video begins immediately upon entering the site): Artist's Table

It's really insightful, but what I really like about this program is that it's just two great minds and masters of their respective work that come together and pretty much just shoot the shit. On a personal note, an early childhood memory of mine is when I met Itzhak Perlman at the Aspen Summer Music Festival many moons ago - but I'll save that story for another post.

Well...I wanted to find a video of the actual program and post it here b/c the website only has the audio, but in searching for it on the net, I came across this video clip on youtube of Jacques Pépin and Julia Child that's just gold.

Julia Child: I like beer!

And yes, Julia Child was a spy.

your song of the day...

Undoubtably one of the greatest song that was ever written, I could listen to it on repeat until the end of time...

Pink Floyd - Time

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but youre older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought Id something more to say

Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
Its good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

David Chang interview on Charlie Rose

Just in case you missed it, here's an hour long interview of David Chang by Charlie Rose from last month. There's not much new information from the interview if you've been up on his nutsack like the whole culinary community has been for the past 2 years, but it's still worthwhile to watch in order to see his demeanor and his interaction with an interviewer.

By the way, if you still haven't eaten at any of his restaurants...what the shit are you waiting for?

your lyrics for today...

Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers - Roadrunner

One two three for five six!

Roadrunner, roadrunner
Going faster miles an hour
Gonna drive past the Stop 'n' Shop
With the radio on
I'm in love with Massachusetts
And the neon when it's cold outside
And the highway when it's late at night
Got the radio on
I'm like the roadrunner

Alright
I'm in love with modern moonlight
128 when it's dark outside
I'm in love with Massachusetts
I'm in love with the radio on
It helps me from being alone late at night
It helps me from being lonely late at night
I don't feel so bad now in the car
Don't feel so alone, got the radio on
Like the roadrunner
That's right

Said welcome to the spirit of 1956
Patient in the bushes next to '57
The highway is your girlfriend as you go by quick
Suburban trees, suburban speed
And it smells like heaven(thunder)
And I say roadrunner once
Roadrunner twice
I'm in love with rock & roll and I'll be out all night
Roadrunner
That's right

Well now
Roadrunner, roadrunner
Going faster miles an hour
Gonna drive to the Stop 'n' Shop
With the radio on at night
And me in love with modern moonlight
Me in love with modern rock & roll
Modern girls and modern rock & roll
Don't feel so alone, got the radio on
Like the roadrunner
O.K., now you sing Modern Lovers

(Radio On!)
I got the AM
(Radio On!)
Got the car, got the AM
(Radio On!)
Got the AM sound, got the
(Radio On!)
Got the rockin' modern neon sound
(Radio On!)
I got the car from Massachusetts, got the
(Radio On!)
I got the power of Massachusetts when it's late at night
(Radio On!)
I got the modern sounds of modern Massachusetts
I've got the world, got the turnpike, got the
I've got the, got the power of the AM
Got the, late at night, rock & roll late at night
The factories and the auto signs got the power of modern sounds
Alright

And here's a rare live perforance of the song by Richman at Joey Ramone's Birthday Party at Coney Island High in May of '98.

(You might also recognize it as the song played during a montage in the awesome "School of Rock".)

John Lennon's Jukebox

Lennon bought this jukebox in 1965 to fill up with singles and take on tour with him. Check out the documentary below made about the artists that are featured on the jukebox to get a full glimpse into Lennon's influences. It's fucking delicious.
