PSA: Danny Howells @ Cielo, Thursday, July 1

One of my favorite djs, Danny Howells, will be rolling through New York on Thursday, July 1 for what will surely be a memorable night of music at Cielo. Sleepy and Boo will be kicking off the night.

To whet your appetite, here's a truly timeless mix made ten years ago next month.

PSA: Jamie Lidell @ Webster Hall, Saturday, Sept. 18

Jamie Lidell will be performing at Webster Hall, Saturday, September 18. Tickets go on sale this Friday at noon. His shows are super fun and I highly suggest you to check it out if you can.

This is his hit single "Multiply" from 2005:

From Bowery Presents:

Jamie Lidell hasn’t stopped moving.

He’s like a shark. Albeit a stone cold funked-up, sonically obsessed, romantically soulful killer shark. And he isn’t going to stop. No, he won’t stop. Please don’t ask him to. Just get out of the way, enjoy the spectacle and the soundtrack.

Jamie’s a genuinely restless soul. He broke out of small-town England and has been a nomad ever since. His constant desire to progress—leaping and stumbling towards new discoveries—has defined his musical journey so far; and there’s no sign of it fading away.

Dig into the discography and you’ll find underground techno, two albums of Super_Collider’s fondly recalled science-funk (with Cristian Vogel), and his magnificently wigged-out solo debut Muddlin Gear. Then, in 2005, came Multiply, a surprisingly hook-stuffed, meticulously produced platter of deliciously uplifting soul and funk that won international adulation. Meanwhile, Jamie’s one-man shows were, quite literally, something else. Live, he pushed himself and his technology against the limits of chaos and control.

By 2008, Jamie had become Jim—building on the foundations of Multiply to construct a warm, invitingly plush bordello of funk, disco, grooves and gospel; with secret chambers of poignant soul. The accompanying tour saw him evolve from peerless sonic manipulator into a dandy showman leading a blazingly talented four-piece across the world’s clubs, stadia and TV studios. Yet, that sense of exploration that he craves was never far away.

Now it’s 2010, and Jim has left the building. So Jamie returns with a new map for these territories. Undoubtedly, Compass is his most eclectic album yet. Songs shift, chop, change and mutate genres and forms before our very ears. It’s got funk in spades; the jaw-dropping power of the vocals is stronger than ever; it rocks, it pops, it’s sweet, angry, hard, soulful and soft, often within the span of a single track. It’s the restless album that finally matches the soul of its creator.

“I wrote every song in a month,” Jamie says, “It’s been an emotional couple of years, so I tapped into what I wanted to say and started writing. There was a lot to draw on.” Recorded in Los Angeles, New York and Canada, Jamie’s fellow travelers on Compass include Beck, Feist, Gonzales, Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear and Pat Sansone of Wilco. Musically and lyrically this is very much A Jamie Lidell Production—reflecting not only his exhilarating, diverse tastes, but also a year of change, love, longing and arrival at a new place. When he takes to the road in 2010, he’ll be bringing a band again, but stripping it back; keeping it lean. For both newcomers and initiates, this will be an experience. And no, he won’t stop.

Sharam - Love Love Love (Original Mix)

Sent to me from my buddy Paul An (who previously did a chart on this blog) because I told him my friend had a good time during Sharam's set at Bonnaroo. And if you've never heard, I strongly suggest you to check out Deep Dish's mix compilation Yoshiesque.

When In Rome - The Promise

Just caught the last fifteen minutes of Napoleon Dynamite and was reminded of the awesomeness of the movie.

(I was a bit hesitant in putting up the original music video - was going to embed the video with just the lyrics - but that'd be a serious disservice to the four people who actually check out this blog.)

If you need a friend,
don't look to a stranger,
You know in the end,
I'll always be there.

And when you're in doubt,
and when you're in danger,
Take a look all around,
and I'll be there.

I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say. (I promise)
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be. (I promise)
But if you'll wait around a while, I'll make you fall for me,
I promise, I promise you I will.

When your day is through,
and so is your temper,
You know what to do,
I'm gonna always be there.

Sometimes if I shout,
it's not what's intended.
These words just come out,
with no gripe to bear.

I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say. (I promise)
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be. (I promise)
But if you'll wait around a while, I'll make you fall for me,
I promise, I promise you...

I'm sorry, but I'm just thinking of the right words to say. (I promise)
I know they don't sound the way I planned them to be. (I promise)
And if I had to walk the world, I'd make you fall for me,
I promise, I promise you I will.

I gotta tell ya, I need to tell ya, I gotta tell ya, I gotta tell yaaaa ...

(I promise)
And if I had to walk the world, I'd make you fall for me,
I promise, I promise you I will ...
I will...
I will...
I will

Exclusive: Fox Developing Napoleon Dynamite Animated Series

By Alex Weprin on May 14, 2010 04:10 PM

An animated television series based on the 2004 film Napoleon Dynamite is currently in development at Fox, a network spokesperson has confirmed to FishbowlLA.

Most of the original cast from the 2004 cult favorite are on board to reprise their roles from the film, according to people familiar with the project. Actors lending their voices include Jon Heder as the title character Napoleon Dynamite, Efran Ramirez as Pedro, Aaron Ruell as Kip Dynamite and Jon Gries as Uncle Rico. Likewise Jared and Jerusha Hess, who created the characters and wrote and directed the film, are closely involved with the potential animated series.

If Fox picks up the project, which is in the pilot phase, it would make sense to plug the show into its Sunday night animation lineup, joining The Simpsons and Family Guy. With The Cleveland Show already renewed through 2011, Fox may have to cancel American Dad in order to make room for the new series on Sundays, or move one of the shows to a different night.

Jared and Jerusha Hess have a longstanding relationship with Fox, with the company's Fox Searchlight arm having distributed Napoleon Dynamite as well as their latest film Gentlemen Broncos.

News of the potential series comes just a few days before the broadcaster holds its annual upfront presentation to advertisers in New York Monday.

Soul Clap - Live at Sunday School For Degenerates

When we first made it to Made Event’s now legendary WMC closing bash 4 years ago we we’re completely blown away. The party was still at the now defunct (and sorely missed) Pawn Shop parking lot and I’m pretty sure Sunday School was the only day of the year they opened up out there, so it was really special. It was basically way too packed with the hot ass sun cooking your ass while getting absolutely mental to the most upfront house/techno DJs in the world and boy did it leave a lasting impression. While, some people complained when the event moved to Ice Palace in ‘09, I think the added grassyness and extra space outside made the new digs an even more fun place to party, plus having the inside area in a massive warehouse space is the perfect environment for slamming Adam Beyer style techno.

Needless to say, when we were asked to play Sunday School this year we were totally honored and blown away and when we found out we got the 9:30-11am outside set time we were even more excited. If you know us, you know this is pretty much our dream gig and time slot, so we immediately got to work preparing the perfect set to reach the more techno oriented crowd, but still showcase our unique sound. Saturday night we hit the sack super early, got up fresh at 6am, hit Latin Cafe 2000 for breakfast sandwiches and Cuban coffee and headed down to get in the morning time vibes. It was a bit cloudy all day but there were some amazing moments when the floaty jams brought out the sun, the crowd response was beyond anything we could have imagined and we even ended up with this here awesome recording to share with everyone! Most of all, thanks to the entire Made Event team for being super pro, all our friends for getting up early/staying up late and smiling and going crazy in front of the booth, Zoe for being Ms America, DJ T for dancing on stage the whole time and of course Betty Kang. We can’t do it without all yalls support

Released in 2004 on Secret Planet, an offshoot of the formidable progressive house label Silver Planet Recordings, I've been a fan of this track since the first time I heard it...

The Creators Project

Following up on the Lavelle post...

The Creators Project event series — a roving global celebration—launches this summer on June 26, when The Creators rolls into 80,000-square-feet of display and performance space honeycombed throughout the legendary Milk Studios in New York’s Meatpacking District.

The event is going to be a groundbreaking combination of interactive art and installations, panels, workshops, screenings, and live performances. As much as The Creators Project is a digital archive of our digital world, it is also a testament to the enduring appeal of the Real. Many of the artists within the program explore the way that digitally manipulated images, sounds, and motions converge in real time, in real spaces.

Some things at the New York event you should watch out for…

• London’s UVA (United Visual Artists) will be installing several works including their truly awe-inspiring and rarely viewed Triptych. Stay tuned to the Creators Blog for some exciting news around a customized installation of the piece.

• Nick Zinner, guitarist of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, will also be installing a major image and sound composition—new creative territory for Zinner, who has been obsessed with a particular style of documentary photography for well over a decade.

• There will also be several screenings and “performances” of Spike Jonze’s newest film, the robot love-story I’m Here, complete with a special interactive video booth where viewers will be given the chance to record messages about the film directly to Spike.

• We’re also preparing a global installation with the LA-based directorial duo Radical Friend. Stay tuned for more information on their epic vision as we near the New York launch date in June.

• LIVE MUSIC BY: Interpol, Mark Ronson, Die Antwoord, Neon Indian, The Rapture, Sleigh Bells, Gang Gang Dance, Salem, and Very Special Guests.

• DJ SETS BY: N.A.S.A., XXXChange, Lemonade, and Mira Calix.

• EXHIBITS: The Digital Flesh by Radical Friend, A Sculpture of the Album by xx, Triptych & Hereafter by United Visual Artists, My Secret Heart by Mira Calix, Rainbow Vomit by MOS Architects, Melter 2 by Takeshi Murata, A.D.A.B.A. by Nick Zinner, Cube by Muti Randolph, L.A.S.E.R. Tag by Graffiti Research Lab, O.S.S.I. by Hojun Song, Jetpack Baseball & NIDHOGG by Mark Essen, Frozen Event by Ricardo Carioba, and Shred Master Pro by Legs.

The Creators Project | James Lavelle

To see the related video, follow this link. Can't stop the video from starting, so instead of embedding it here, go to the link if you want to see a short video that features James Lavelle.

A Chat with James Lavelle --

The Creators Project: Over the course of your career you have obviously been really interested in the visual side of things—curating a consistent and highly popular work for Mo’ Wax album artwork, creating soundtracks to films, and generally making sure the visual aspect of your work is very strong. How does this inform the musical side of your work?
James Lavelle: I’ve always been very visually led, and film has always been one of the biggest inspirations for my music. It’s a different way of working because you have a direct emotion; you have a sort of a theme—a sonic idea of what you’re trying to do. Whether it’s thriller and you are trying to create music that has tension, or something more futuristic that needs a futuristic sort of sound. Using the visual as a guideline, it’s a lot easier to create certain kinds of tracks.

Some amazing directors have created videos to your music. Is it a collaborative effort, or do you just give them the track and let them get on with it?
I like to get involved to a degree, but when you’re working with really amazing people, the whole idea is that you sort of have an idea or a context of what you’re trying to achieve and you want those people to go and do their thing. So generally, with videos like that, you are sort of working with them because of what they do as individuals. But it’s always good to have an idea and a direction. I tend to be somewhat involved in that process.

UNKLE’s latest album, Where Did the Night Fall, came out earlier this year. Did you utilize new and exciting technology?
We used Logic Pro Tools to record, and we used Ableton quite a lot to rearrange samples. But we also used analog to record a lot of stuff to get a certain kind of tone, so we are always moving between different things.

One of the things many people cite when they’re talking about UNKLE was your performance with the Heritage Orchestra in 2008. You’ll be performing with them again this year. Explain what this collaboration is all about.
The orchestra reinterprets different artists’ records and has been working with contemporary bands as of late. UNKLE released this record called End Titles… in 2008, which kind of based on music that would work for film and TV. We then did a classical version of it with the Heritage Orchestra at Christmastime in 2008 at the Union Chapel. It was really an amazing, amazing night, and it was even better because we didn’t have to do anything. We just turned up and it was the best musicians you could ever imagine playing onstage. You know we had like the horns in the pulpits, Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones had created this amazing light sculpture, which hung from the ceiling. It was diamond-shaped and looked like a pipe organ. So people just thought it was just, you know, this organ in the background, but then when the orchestra came on the “organ” transformed into this beautiful LED light experience that with all of this beautiful color. It was really beautiful.

We heard you were really into sci-fi films as a kid. Is that right?
Yeah.

How much have those movies influenced your work?
I suppose that was one the biggest kind of influences. And I think in many ways that vision has come true—some of it’s good and some of it is really bad. When you travel a lot you see the influence of technology in much greater ways than you do when you are in your home base. You see how it mixes with culture, which is an amazing thing because it’s caused the world to become really diverse.

Boy 8-Bit Essential Mix - 15 May 2010

David Morris aka Boy 8-Bit has surely seen a rise in his stock price after this Essential Mix. I'm not one to really like a heavy presence of video game sounds in my music, but in my opinion, he pulls off a valiant effort in not sounding like a moron...

Random Mixes #4, mixed by Greg Wilson

The fourth installment in this year-long project...

RANDOM INFLUENCES #4 by Random Influences

Launched on his 50th birthday, Greg Wilson compiles a celebratory selection of 7” singles from his formative years. Covering the 60’s through to the mid-70’s, when he started out as a fresh-faced 15 year old club DJ, these records embody the soundtrack of his youth.

With running times of approximately 2 hours, the 12 individual monthly parts will conclude in a full day’s worth of music. Having only pre-determined the opening and closing tracks, Greg will select the rest as he goes along, moving in whatever directions his mood takes him at that moment, in a similar way to how it might be if he was sitting at home playing records to friends. The title, ‘Random Influences’, reflects this arbitrary approach.

PSA: Tom Middleton - 2 parties/1 weekend

A large weekend is happening in New York with about a billion parties going on, all headlined by super talented musicians...two of which will be manned by the superbly gifted and Jedi master himself, Tom Middleton. The first goes down tomorrow night at Sullivan Room, and on Sunday, June 6, he's playing at the Long Island City Water Taxi Beach venue for an afternoon/early evening set in the sun. With his last set still ingrained in my mind (you can download a part of it @ Basic NYC's DJ mixes page) I'm looking forward to what will certainly be a special two days of music.

Get your tickets here. Come early, stay late, and dance the night away.

Skipworth & Turner - Thinking About Your Love

Released in 1985, this Skipworth & Turner hit has been my favorite for a few months. I first heard it as a remake, titled "Skippy's Down The Well" on the label Your Disco Needs You!. Unfortunately, that cut isn't released on vinyl, but I found the original, and have been caning it.

A couple of people have mentioned it's similarities to Prince...but better. I don't disagree with that.
