The Chemical Brothers

The other day, I say to my friend while listening to some block rockin' beats, "I really love the Chem Bros." My friend replies, "No fucking shit." I guess everyone that knows me knows that I love The Chemical Brothers. I love them for their mentalness, their attitude towards the whole music game, and pretty much for everything go about doing their thang...blah, blah, blah.

Anyway, a personal anecdote: A truly religious experience I had was a live show of theirs that I caught in Central Park, back in '05. Absolutely stone-cold sober, I experienced the Chem Bros and left on one of the highest highs I've had to date.

(Okay, whilst looking for videos to post, I came across a quality capture of their recent live set held at Hammerstein Ballroom and it's fucking me sideways!! Fuck me...it's getting me high all over again...)

Reading is FUNdamental

"Made in America" by Bill Bryson is an informative and also entertaining book about the growth of American English. It's a cool read if you're into linguism and American history and it's got a chock full of fun trivia you can dish out at a cocktail party.

The book begins with the Mayflower and sheds light on many inaccuracies we've been taught all our lives (at least what I've been taught in the public schools while growing up). It then goes into the creation of this nation, and continues along the timeline covering many of America's epochs up until the early 1990's (the book was published in 1994).

Words That Start With the Letters "SM"...

...are overwhelming awesome.

smitten; smart; smash; smurf; smile; smirch; smoosh, smooth

And these are words I've come up with without even looking in the dictionary.

Sure, you can say that 'smash' isn't necessarily awesome, i.e. His face got smashed in by a baseball bat. However, I'm saying that the words, on balance, are good words...or that words that do have multiple meanings that start with the letters 'sm' have good meanings as well.

Maybe I just have no idea what I'm talking about...

This is all in my quest into finding the unifying theory of life a la Sickboy in "Trainspotting"...not really but kinda.

Seriously though, this is one of the downfalls about the proliferation of blogs - fools like myself who just carry on writing about nothing in particular who just waste bandwidth and ether or whatever the fuck space it takes up to actually type these letters out onto the world wide web.

At least the Mets won today and we're riding a nice three game winning streak. And with that, I've probably disinterested six out of the seven readers in this stupid web blog altogether.

Maybe some Johnny Cash will get train(wreck) back on track:






By the way...I caught a few minutes of The Simpsons episode "The Mysterious Voyage of Our Homer" today. You knew Mr. Cash was the voice of the Coyote, yeah? What a sm...sm...smaduper episode.

New Weezer / Old Weezer

Weezer's come out with a new single that they've posted on youtube. It's infectiously super poppy. Hate it or love it or be ambivalent about it...I'll always have a soft spot in my music library for some Weezer.



Btw, if you get 3 or more of the internet references in the video...yeah, you spend a lot of time in front of the computer, but not only that, you're a geek and a nerd. If you don't get any of the references, don't worry...you're not missing anything at all (except for all the references in the new video). If you're wondering, yes, I'm a geek and a nerd...but you obviously already knew that.

Nirvana

Don't know why, but I'm really into Nirvana today. Actually, I do know why - I caught the last 15 mins of Nirvana Unplugged on VH1 Classics. Amazes me how it's been 15 years since that recording.

Death by Blogging

In Web World of 24/7 Stress, Writers Blog Till They Drop

SAN FRANCISCO — They work long hours, often to exhaustion. Many are paid by the piece — not garments, but blog posts. This is the digital-era sweatshop. You may know it by a different name: home.

A growing work force of home-office laborers and entrepreneurs, armed with computers and smartphones and wired to the hilt, are toiling under great physical and emotional stress created by the around-the-clock Internet economy that demands a constant stream of news and comment.

Of course, the bloggers can work elsewhere, and they profess a love of the nonstop action and perhaps the chance to create a global media outlet without a major up-front investment. At the same time, some are starting to wonder if something has gone very wrong. In the last few months, two among their ranks have died suddenly.

Two weeks ago in North Lauderdale, Fla., funeral services were held for Russell Shaw, a prolific blogger on technology subjects who died at 60 of a heart attack. In December, another tech blogger, Marc Orchant, died at 50 of a massive coronary. A third, Om Malik, 41, survived a heart attack in December.

Other bloggers complain of weight loss or gain, sleep disorders, exhaustion and other maladies born of the nonstop strain of producing for a news and information cycle that is as always-on as the Internet.

To be sure, there is no official diagnosis of death by blogging, and the premature demise of two people obviously does not qualify as an epidemic. There is also no certainty that the stress of the work contributed to their deaths. But friends and family of the deceased, and fellow information workers, say those deaths have them thinking about the dangers of their work style.
